Supernova

for 5.1 Channel Fixed Media (2017)

Supernova is a 5.1 multichannel work that depicts the death cycle of a star. In this piece, I sought depict the death cycle of a Red Giant, it’s explosion into a supernova, and its formation into a black hole. The entire event, which in reality takes several million years, is portrayed within 4 minutes: 0:00-1:00 Build up to explosion, 1:00-3:00 Aftermath of explosion 3:00-4:00, Rotation and formation of a black hole.

Throughout the soundscape, I wanted the listener to feel immersed within the environment, allowing for smaller gestures to flourish throughout the different channels as the piece develops. I sought to create a full, expansive texture that displays a sense of grandeur and wonder.

The work was created using built synths in Logic, as well as combined with patches made in SuperCollider.
