Notes

Voices was written for the clarinet studio of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. The concept of Voices is an 8-minute series of evolving musical episodes in response to the events of the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest throughout the United States and the world for the eradication of racism and bigotry.

From the courageous first responders, to the fearless protesters for justice and peace everywhere, we all have been equipped with voices; voices with the power to change narratives that separate us into those that unite. The piece is set as a rhapsody, gradually traveling from dark to light, mourning to joy. Through various subsets of harmony and timbre, each set of voices, represented by small groups within the ensemble, will depict this symbolic journey from great adversity to the manifestation of a time more joyful, loving, and just for all. I envision this short work as a musical meditation and/or prayer for our collective healing.

The musical components of the work were taken from my emotional work Reflection for tenor saxophone, violin, viola, & cello as well as my choral setting of the Latin liturgical text Ubi Caritas, which speaks of love, charity, and unity.
